Ta Phin Village

Ta Phin Village is one of the most famous ecotourist spots in Sapa, which is home to the ethnic minority groups such as Red Dao and H'Mong people. The Village is situated in the valley, surrounded by spectacular mountains and rice terraces. Ta Phin village is located about 1500 m above sea level in a remote valley covered by rice paddies and cornfields. The village is about 17 km northeast of Sapa town center, 375 km from Hanoi. There are only a few roads leading to the village from Sapa town which helps to protect the habitants from mass tourism contrary to Lao Chai, Cat Cat, or Ta Van villages.

The road to Ta Phin village is extremely beautiful. With the mountain sloping side of the green terraced fields. And two sides of the road are many flowers blooming. The village is home to ethnic minorities, including two Red Dao and H’mong ethnic groups

The best time to visit Ta Phin is March and May or from mid-September to early December. That time of the year, the rice in terraced fields is beautiful, the weather is dry and pleasant. It is sunny during the day and cools at night.

 

How to get there

Motorbike

Ta Phin is the nearest village of Red Dao’s ethnic group within the area of Sapa district. From Sapa, it will take about 30 minutes to reach here by motorbike. The mountainous road can make it difficult for cars to move, so the best solution is to hire a “xe om”, or motorbike taxi, and the experienced driver will take you to the right place at a very reasonable price with many useful advice and tips.

 

Trekking

A lot of tourists choose to trek to Ta Phin village to enjoy the beautiful view of rice paddies, beautiful sceneries, and some other villages on the way. Trekking roads to the village start from Sapa and are about 12 to 14 km long depending on where you stop in the village. The easiest way to take is the one starting around Sapa lake: a small rocky way that goes through Ma Tra village and its rice paddies. Then you enter the concrete road, travel through some scenic hills and a small bamboo forest, you will arrive at Ta Phin village

Dao people use more than 10 kinds of leaves, sometimes even up to 120 different types to create water for bathing. Bathing in the leaves is believed to be good for your health, helps to relieve pain, and recovering of health quickly.

Explore Ta Phin Cave

About 1 km to the north of Ta Phin Commune People's Committee, at the foot of Hoang Lien Son Mountain, is Ta Phin Cave. Ta Phin Cave is about 5 meters high, 3 meters wide, and has a path down to the ground. Around 30 meters to the underground, tourists will encounter a small cave. There are many stalactites sparkling with various shapes inside the cave such as a young mother holding babies, fairies, or giant stick rice tray. Especially deep inside the cave, there is a strange stone with the image of chicken feet and horse feet.

 

Visit Ta Phin Monastery

Ta Phin Monastery was built in 1942 in Ta Phin Village. This is a place for Christian nuns who lived for many years before leaving for Hanoi in 1945. The monastery was abandoned since then, but walls and pillars still exist, making it a check-in point hot with young people. Many tourists are attracted by the ancient architectural features, quiet space of the monastery.

 

Check-in cloud bridge

Another tourist attraction in Ta Phin is Cloud Bridge, a special suspension bridge over Muong Hoa stream. This bridge is made up of rattan ropes, so it is named Sapa May Bridge. Rattan means “May” in Vietnamese. Another word for May is Cloudy, as, on days of dense fog when crossing the bridge, people will feel like walking on clouds
