Inya Lake

Created in 1883, Inya lake is the largest lake in Yangon. Located nearly Parami road, Inya lake is one of the public place for local people to enjoy peaceful atmosphere and fresh air.

Not only possessing countless of beautiful golden towers, Yangon is also well known for Inya Lake, a magnificent site where tourists can just simply enjoy a strolling on the weekend. Located just 6 miles north of downtown Yangon, Inya is the Yangon's largest artificial lake which is roughly five times larger than Kandawgyi.

Inya Lake was built in 1882 to provide a clean water supply for the British colonial government at the time. With a peaceful atmosphere and picturesque landscape, the lake is now a public place for many people to relax and enjoy the fresh air. Meanwhile, some areas have become private property to the richest residents of Yangon.

Inya Lake is perhaps best known for two things: Aung San Suu Kyi’s house, where she spent so much time under arrest, on University Avenue on the lake’s southern shore. This is one of the most exclusive areas of the city to live. Many of Yangon’s rich and powerful live in mansions surrounding the lake.

Coming to Inya Lake, there are endless of interesting activities that tourists can join such as rowing or sailing. Walking around the lake photographing is a great opportunity for Yangon wandering travelers. With the photogenic landscape, the sunrise and sunset here is extremely beautiful and vibrant, suitable for a romantic date.

After experiencing a dreamy sunset watch, tourists can walk up the west side to grab dinner, as a variety of culinary options will be waiting for visitors to discover. If tourists long for a fancy dinner, high-end restaurants such as L’Opera or Sabai DMZ will satisfy them with fabulous dishes, lake views and garden strolls. If tourists just simply want to try out local foods, then on the Pyay Road, endless of local food stalls are destined for one to enjoy.

From downtown Yangon, tourists can take a taxi to Inya Lake for a fee of 4,000 kyat. The best time to stop by the lake is from November to February for pleasant weather.
