Dark Cave & Light Cave - Caves, Limestones and A Lake

Most visitors of Halong cruises will be visiting the famous Surprise Cave, following the cruise itineraries. But going further from that part just 2km more is another beautiful grotto, if not one of the most beautiful in Halong Bay, the Dark & Light Cave; where the perfect combination of lime-stone mountains and sea makes a unique site to visit.

Overview
The caves is formed by an enclosed group of islands, which is still in the Halong Bay area, but close to the border Bai Tu Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay. The imposing islands create a sea-lake sheltered from the blows of sea wind and only connected with the sea through a 4 meter wide, 100 meter long, and 3 meter high mouth. The lake inside seems like a stadium surrounded by high podium. On the cliff one still find traces of fossils of fresh-water snails, which prove that it was a human habitat in the past and must have been a deep valley then.

Long and short, dark and light tunnels
Just at the base of the islands, there is an arched entrance leads to the grotto right at the water level. Passing through the natural entrance, visitor will see a tranquil round lake, surrounded by luxuriant trees and different sized stone walls. There are weeping fig trees shading inside and many orchids hang their sweet-scented flowers. The Dark Cave is the long and dark one, which will require a torch to be handed for visitors beforehand. In contrast, the Light Cave is short, and you can see the other bright side from this side.
