That Luang Temple - The National Symbol of Laos
That Luang is the most important and significant religious and national monument of Laos. Plundered repeatedly in the history by invaders and twice an effort to restore, the great masterpiece of monument, covered in gold leaves and magnificent like a fortress is still the most sacred place of the country.
That Luang Temple
Situated about four kilometers northeast of Vientiane, built by King Setthathirat in 1566 on the site of a 13th century Khmer ruin after he moved the national capital from Luang Prabang to Vientiane. Destroyed by Burmese, Siamese and Chinese in history, it was restored from the ruins the first time in 1900 and the second time in 1930, both by the help of French.

The golden That Luang is surrounded by high walks, measured 85m on each side and contains various Buddha images, two temples with the main stupa, approximately of 45 m height in Laos architecture style. Every November the Boun That Luang Festival is held in Vientiane, with parades, live music and religious ceremonies that attract thousands of people.
