Tam Giang Lagoon

Tam Giang Lagoon

Tam Giang Lagoon is the largest lagoon in Southeast Asia with a total surface area of 22,000 hectares. All big rivers in the area such as Perfume River, O Lau River, and Bo River pour into Tam Giang Lagoon before going to the East Sea. Many traditional craft villages are situated along these rivers’ banks and the natural beauty and nearby mangrove forests have made the lagoon a popular tourist destination.

Tam Giang Lagoon has a depth of 2 to 4 meters and in some places of 7 meters, the immense water surface is an area of important economic activity bringing high income with its. It supports the livelihood of 300,000 people who live along the shores rely upon its aquatic resources. Every day huge numbers of sea products caught at the lagoon are then sold in local markets or to wholesale traders. Taking a boat trip on Tam Giang Lagoon, you can see closely how the fishermen divide up the areas with hand-made nets which are staked out to maximize their catch.
