Nong Khiaw

A small town on the banks of the Nam Ou River,  Nong Khiaw (also spelled Nong Kiaow) boasts a gorgeous backdrop of imposing limestone mountains, picturesque river views, and genuine local color.

Trekking and cycling around the village and mountain are the most popular activities in Nong Khiaw. It is also famous for the bridge that connects the two parts of the village. Standing on this bridge you will have a chance to enjoy the beauty of the Nam Ou river and the great surrounding mountains.

Ban Sop Houn: Ban Sop Houn is a small and peaceful village located on Phadeng mountain, Nong Khiaw province, Laos. It is a small adventure for many people, you need to hike about 1.5 hours through fields and forest to reach Ban Sop Houn. You can see the Nong Khiaw Viewpoint about 50 meters after the Temple of Ban Sop Houn. From there, you have a good view above the cloud to admire the scenery surrounding Phadeng mountain as well as Nong Khiaw with rivers and mountains. There is a hut on the top for tourists to have a place to rest and relax after a long time climbing.

Pha Kuang Cave: Pha Kuang Cave is 300 m in length, you must squeeze in some sections in order to move on the cave. If you want to visit the cave without a local guide, you have to pay US$ 1.20 for the ticket. To visit all rooms in this cave you have to go across a small hole with rope and narrow gaps on the cave. The deeper you go the thinner air makes you breathe heavily. Notice that you must stop going when you see the warning sign for safety.

100 Waterfalls: In the beginning, you can enjoy beautiful green fields then the trail through the forest is more difficult to go. After about 1 hour of trekking along a stream, tourists can see the waterfalls. The “100 Waterfalls” does not have enough 100 waterfalls, it was just a poetic name. Walking carefully on one after another waterfall will be very interesting. The terrain of waterfalls is various, there are some bamboo ladders in some slope sections. Make sure that you remember to bring your swimwear to enjoy the swimming pools around the waterfalls.

Transportation

  • Public truck: from Luang Prabang, tourists can take a public truck which will pick them up at 9 am at the south bus stop. The price is around $7.5 dollar, you can bargain with the owner of the price is much higher. It will take you about 3 hours to go to Nong Khiaw.
  • Bus: traveling by bus is more flexible about hours because there are some buses are available for you to choose from. On the other hand, it will take you from 4 to 5 hours and cannot bargain the price.
