Establish

Can Tho Museum was founded in the year of 1976 and officially got the name “Can Tho Museum” in 1992 after many changes. In the same year, to enhance public service and scientific researches, the local authority started new construction remodeling contents for exhibition. Nowadays, this is the biggest museum in the Mekong Delta, with a total surface area of 2,700 square meters.

Exhibitions

The museum exhibits Can Tho historical relics about cultures and inhabitants in Can Tho through historical periods, through economical-social and cultural achievements of three main ethnic minorities: Kinh (Viet), Hoa (Chinese Vietnamese) and Khmer during the process of nation building and national defense and development, which has resulted in today’s beautiful Tay Do land.

In 2000, Can Tho museum was established and put into operation with the following fundamental contents of exhibition:

  • General introduction about the natural and social features of Can Tho.
  • Can Tho-Nation-Inhabitants: Introduction about geographical location, climate, ecology, biodiversity, landscape, Oc Eo culture, Viet-Chinese-Khmer culture.
  • The history of resistance against foreign aggression of the locals: the resistance against French colonialists and American imperialists.
  • Economic, culture and social achievements of Can Tho from 1975 to present.
  • Subjective exhibition: contents of display are frequently changed, introducing Vietnam and the World’s histories, cultures.

In 2006, a retired officer in Ho Chi Minh City decided to donate hundreds of his heirlooms for Can Tho Museum, including many exotic and valuable objects such as: butterflies, insects, flowers and herbs preserved in artificial golden amber products, eights brown-banded cockroach Buddha statues. The statues were carved in different positions and by fossil amber. When those statues are shined by some lights, the color will change into emerald. The Museum currently displays more than 1,000 precious and various artifacts and objects.

Tourists can add this destination during your trip to the South of Vietnam, particularly Can Tho City. The museum situates in the corner of Hoa Binh and Tran Quoc Toan streets. Opening time is 8 am and closing time is 5 pm.
